This tag was adopted in 1906 when General Order No. 204 was issued (20 DEC 1906). Gen. Order No. 204 states that the tag is to be "an aluminum tag the size of a half-dollar (30mm), of suitable thickness, stamped with the name, rank, company, regiment or corps of the wearer." The Gen. Order goes on to state that the there will be only one tag issued per enlistment.
Most M1906 tags are stamped very nicely and evenly. It can be assumed that the persons doing the stamping had the time to stamp the tags as there was no war on and the Army was quite small.
